Tell us about your favorite purchase made at the HWNT-FW Latina Art Show/ArtSi?

I love all of my ArtSi pieces. I have gifted several of my purchases to friends and family.  l also love my wall of "small art". They hang above my nightstand next to my side of the bed. My lamp casts the perfect glow. Occasionally, I have donated pieces from my personal collection, too. I am usually too busy working at ArtSi being the Chair, Co-Chair, Caterer and/or Cashier, that I don't usually have time to make purchases. So, I try to do my part and purchase pieces after the show directly from the artists.

What do you remember most the first ArtSi?
We were looking for a new and fun way to fundraise for HWNT. Our Chair, Adriana Giraldo came up with an idea to Celebrate HWNT Latina Art. Her mother was an amazing artist from Columbia. She donated our first piece. It was a beautiful still life of two pears. It was incredibly beautiful. We started immediately and began receiving art from all over the world. It was exhilarating. I was on the first committee and helped plan the entire event. Unfortunately, I had to miss the actual show, because I went to meet my in laws for the first time in Lebanon. I was there in spirit and was put back to work the minute I returned.

Since that first show, I was hooked. I have been involved with every show since. I even helped rename the event ArtSi. It was a play on the word Artsy and how Si! we are so supportive of so many causes...most importantly...Si for Art and Si for Education!

What do you love about ArtSi?

The artists that have donated over the years have become great friends of mine. I just love that they are free spirited and passionate about what they love. They are all so giving and share our chapter's passion about education and scholarships. I also support the artists by displaying their art at my restaurant, Chadra Mezza and Grill. It is my way of thanking them for their generosity. Plus, it makes my work day more pleasant.

Why should people attend?

It's a great party! You can taste great food, purchase great art, listen to great music, and dance. Most importantly, you are supporting our scholarship program for Latinas In Progress. We are honored every year to mentor 80 plus Latinas that are eager to learn about college. Right now, we have a new class ready to fill the seats of the last class. We can't wait to meet them and teach them the tools they need to graduate from college. Your donations and purchases help us. In March, we were able to award every single Latina that applied to our scholarship program with a scholarship totaling almost $200,000.

Attend ArtSi and bring a friend! Our community needs our help and together we can rise to the challenge.

What is your favorite piece purchased through HWNT-FW Latina Art Show/ArtSi?  I enjoy all 8 of the pieces we have bought over the years, all of which have been displayed at various times and locations in our home.  If I had to pick one though, it would be "Lupe Velez" which we bought in 2011 by this year's featured artist, Lizeth Garcia.  Lupe Velez was a talented Mexican film actress who started in Mexican Burlesque before moving to silent films and "talkies," making the transition to Broadway and then back to Hollywood.  She was one of the first Mexican actresses to be successful in Hollywood and while her death was surrounded by dramatic circumstances, I can appreciate her efforts to be successful in a tough field.  I also found it ironic during my research that Lupe also had a connection to Texas and education - her parents sent her to what is now Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio at the age of 13 and this is where she learned English.  It seems so fitting that Lizeth provided this painting to support HWNT's Latina in Progress program!

Other ArtSi pieces I am proud to own:
2013 - "Kosher Graffiti" by Victor A. Trevino, "Shadow" by Eric Rebosio, "Monet: Color Blind" by Julie Pomerantz
2011 - "Lupe Velez" by Lizeth Garcia
2010 - "Working Class Hero" by Nadia Hamilton
2009 - "Spirit of Angels" by Yolanda Valdez-Rementeria
2007 - "Angel Dance" by Carrie Rominger
2006 - "Aquatic Symphony" by Carrie Rominger

Where is it hanging now? "Lupe Velez" is proudly displayed in my office at work as shown in the photo.  While some visitors think her expression is similar to mine at times, this painting reminds me of my Grandma Louise and a photo of her before my wedding.  I think the generational connection to the same era also speaks to me as well as the fact that Lupe and my grandmother were strong, trailblazing women paving the way for others.

How many Latina Art Show/ArtSi events have you attended?
All 10!

What do you love about ArtSi and supporting HWNT-FW? ArtSi represents the culmination of a lot of talented HWNT members to produce a supportive community gathering of generous artists, businesses, and donors working together to invest in the future Latina leaders of our community.  I've been a proud member of HWNT-FW since 2004 and look forward to building upon the organization's success as Chair in 2015 and 2016.  HWNT-FW is community, sisterhood, mentorship, development, support, friendship, networking, opportunity and more wrapped up in a dynamic organization that is making an impact.   5) Any words of advice to new attendees/art buyers of ArtSi? Find something that speaks to you and bid like crazy to get it!  Be sure to visit the handsome lead bartender, Chris Trevino.  He'll help you loosen up those wallets and purse-strings for a good cause.

Tell us about your favorite purchase made at the HWNT-FW Latina Art Show/ArtSi?
I love all of my ArtSi pieces! It’s hard to choose just one. Each of them are masterpieces produced by talented, local Fort Worth women. I have pieces by Amber Bailey, Tammy Gomez, Vicky Garcia, and this year’s ArtSi Features Artist- Lizeth Garcia proudly displayed in my home.

Why did you purchase these pieces?
Each year I try to purchase a new piece at ArtSi; a piece that really speaks to me throughout the night. ArtSi is an evening filled with fantastic energy so I try to choose a piece that will radiate that same energy. You’ll notice that they all have shared a hint of orgullo de nuestro cultura and a feminine strength. The outlier might be the one with the chickens. “Tio Jose with Chickens” just reminds me of the great Mexican men I’ve grown up around. They, as a group, often get a bad reputation, but I’m very proud to have been raised by a great one. And of course, owning “Dolores del Rio” by this year’s Featured Artist Lizeth Garcia is a true honor. Lizeth is amazing herself, but owning the piece inspired me to research the icon that is Dolores del Rio. She is a 1920s Hollywood star and the first internationally known Mexican actress. She is a Latina trailblazer, and a legend, so it’s absolutely fabulous to have her in my home.

What do you love about ArtSi and why should people attend?
I love the entire concept of ArtSi! It’s such a beautiful idea. Hardworking and committed Latinas orchestrate a fun evening of purchasing art and donations by local citizens that want to help young Latinas pursue their dreams of higher education. How amazing is that? The actual event itself is wonderful. Walls full of talent, baskets full of donations from supportive businesses and a room full of generous and loving people. An entire community gets together to make dreams come true. It truly is one of my favorite events of the year!

Title – Walking Into the Darkness
Artist – Angelica Martinez
Medium – acrylic on canvass
Purchased in 2011

Why did you purchase this piece?
When I saw this piece hanging on the wall at ArtSi, I knew that I had to have it.  I loved the simplicity of the design and the bright red of the dress. It reminded me of my favorite dress, which was similar in style.  It attracted me because she has a determined look on her face, she is either going to kill someone or just taking the bottle to the trash.  There is a story behind her eyes because she is on the precipice of sanity.  I am currently writing that story, so hopefully you will see it in print one day with her on the cover of my novel.

What do you love about ArtSi and why should people attend?

I love ArtSi because it celebrates the community and brings awareness to both local artists and the need for educational scholarships.  This is the 7th year that I have had the pleasure to help plan ArtSi and it just keeps getting better with each passing year!  I’m so excited for our 10th Annual Show and Silent Auction, you will be able to purchase some amazing original artworks, silent auction pieces and have some surprising entertainment.  Be ready to bring out the wallets and help us raise funds for the LIP (Latinas in Progress) Educational Series and Scholarships.

Where is it hanging now?

It is hanging in my home office.

What do you love about ArtSi and supporting HWNT-FW?

I love ArtSi because it brings together the Fort Worth community for a common purpose - supporting and encouraging the educational attainment and professional development of young Latinas, as well as empowering the Fort Worth Hispanic community. The HWNT-FW membership is filled with professionals who generously donate their time and talent to plan events that educate and empower the Fort Worth Hispanic community. I support HWNT-FW because it is an organization made up of hard-working members who remember those teachers, mentors and family members who have helped them achieve their dreams, and honor such support by giving back to our community.

Why should people attend ArtSi?

I highly encourage people to attend ArtSi because it is not just a fundraiser - it is a community celebration with great food, fabulous music and wonderful company. Attending ArtSi is a fun and effortless way to have a positive and long-lasting impact on the local community, and through ArtSi, supporting HWNT-FW is as easy as buying a beautiful piece of art or irresistible silent auction item, or purchasing an advertisement in the playbill. You won't regret joining us for this fantastic evening!

LOCAL, NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS DONATE WORKS OF ART TO HELP YOUNG LATINAS

FORT WORTH, TX (April 21, 2014) – The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas – Fort Worth Chapter (HWNT FW) will host ArtSí, their 10th Annual Art Show and Silent Auction at the Historic Artes de la Rosa Fort Worth Cultural Center for the Arts, 1440 N. Main Street, Fort Worth, TX, on Saturday, June 7th at 6:00 pm. ArtSí is the leading fundraiser for HWNT FW, which supports scholarships for graduates of the Latinas In Progress Educational Series (LIP).

This year’s ArtSí program will be extraordinary as we celebrate a Decade of Latina Art; showcasing pieces from local, national and international artists with silent auction donation baskets from several businesses in the DFW Area.  ArtSí, led by Honorary Chair, Eva Bonilla, who was one of the founders of ArtSí and Co-Author of the Latinas In Progress (LIP) Program, will feature the amazing local artist, Lizeth J. Garcia. Garcia’s work resonates closely with the mission of HWNT FW of empowering women with her piece, “Raquel Torres”. Garcia states, “Women who broke the barriers of borders, language, and inequality; paved their own way and were absolutely unapologetic represent the strength that lives in every one of us.”

We are also very excited and honored to announce our Curator for ArtSí, the very talented William Campbell from the William Campbell Contemporary Art Gallery. Mr. Campbell, and his wife Pam Campbell have been an integral part of the Texas art scene for almost 40 years.  Also, joining our star stellar cast is our Mistress of Ceremonies, Gloria Campos, who not only was a broadcast journalist for 40 years; she also currently serves on the Advisory Board of the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

“HWNT Fort Worth is proud to celebrate 10 years of bringing together our community for an evening of supporting local art and students in pursuit of their academic dreams,” said HWNT Chair, Anette Soto. “In 2005, our chapter hosted a Latina Art Show with proceeds benefiting our scholarship program. The vision was beautiful- local Latinas supporting our local Latina students, transforming beautiful works of art into academic opportunities. This vision has grown into a tremendous event, ArtSi Art Show and Silent Auction, supported by local artists of both genders and many ethnicities, but the passionate cause has always remained the same.”

LOCAL AND NATIONAL ARTISTS DONATE WORKS OF ART TO HELP YOUNG LATINAS

FORT WORTH, TX (June 13, 2013) – The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas – Fort Worth Chapter (HWNT FW) will host ArtSi, their 9th Annual Art Show and Silent Auction in the historic Galeria de la Rosa, Rose Marine Theater (1440 N. Main Street, Fort Worth, TX) on Saturday, August 31st at 6:00 pm. ArtSi is the leading fundraiser for HWNT FW which supports scholarships for graduates of the Latinas In Progress Educational Series (LIP).

This year’s ArtSi program will showcase over 50 multimedia pieces from local, national and international artists with 25 silent auction donation baskets from several businesses in Fort Worth.  While patrons make their bid selections, the crowd will be able to follow the blue to the jazzy sounds of Aurora Bleu.

ArtSi, led by Honorary Chair, Rosa Navejar, will feature an amazing printmaker, Linda Lucia Santana.  Santana’s work resonates closely with the mission of HWNT FW of empowering women.  Her piece, Las Pulseras, shows the nature of women at work and all of the power that is held within that dynamic.

"ArtSi is a fantastic event that really brings our community efforts full circle” stated HWNT-FW Chair, Anette Soto.  “Local artists donate their talent and artwork. Our members are able to purchase and cherish that artwork while helping raise money for scholarships and programs. Our students volunteer their time and see the community giving back. And of course, the entire event is simply FUN and EXCITING to attend!"

Are you interested in joining a committee that is making an impact in the Fort Worth community?

Do you have a passion for helping youth in their journey to higher education?

If so, the HWNT Fort Worth Chapter is recruiting new Education Committee members to join us as we make preparations for the Latinas in Progress (LIP) Class of 2012-2013!

Latinas in Progress (LIP) strives to familiarize senior high school Latinas with college life and the tools to succeed in their personal and professional life. Our education and leadership series consists of five learning sessions, volunteer opportunities, and mentorship resources. Our series enables the students to participate in five modules where they will (1) learn more about applying to college and college life; (2) improve their writing skills; (3) learn to be more assertive; (4) learn about the importance of civic participation; and (5) learn about health and wellness tips and other important life skills. The sessions are taught at local partner colleges and universities during one Saturday a month during the school year from September 2012 to February 2013. LIP also exposes the participants to mentorship resources: women who share their stories of overcoming adversity, achieving higher education, and professional success. The sessions provide enriching learning experiences and encouragement by providing access to opportunities, information, financial resources, and exposure to universities.

As part of the Education Committee, you will help coordinate modules, plan LIP student activities, and provide your time as a mentorship resource for our students.  This year we are gearing up for our largest class yet- 80 dedicated and motivated Tarrant County Latina high school seniors!  To ensure we provide the same quality of resources, we would like to recruit more committee members to help us keep up with the successfully growing number of students.  Although the Education Committee works diligently to inspire our students, we walk away inspired as well after a Saturday morning with these future leaders, teachers, doctors, etc.

For more information, please visit our website: www.lipfw.org

  • The Education Committee meets once a month
  • LIP Modules are every 3rd Saturday of the month at various DFW university/college campuses
  • Members of the Education Committee are also invited to the LIP Holiday Soiree and the Annual Mother-Daughter Scholarship Banquet
  • If you would like additional information or are interested in joining, please contact Anette Soto, Education Chair, at anette.soto@gmail.com

One specific committee position still available, for those that may be interested: LIP Community Service Chair.  The Community Service Chair assists the LIP students on their community service requirements, collected documentation for their service hours, and is available to answer service-related student questions throughout the duration of the LIP program.  This position is of particular importance as students must fulfill the service hour requirement to be eligible for LIP Scholarships.
