At the time, we had no idea how fortunate we were to be the very first.
It snowballed like these things do – somebody knew an HWNT member who had someone in her family in a band. Would they be willing to donate a performance at our annual fundraiser? Sure!
As the band began tuning up that evening, a young woman sat patiently at a nearby table. She wore a blue dress that buttoned down the front. Thick, raven-colored hair cascaded down her shoulders. Her shapely lips would curl into a smile every time she looked up at the giant piñata hanging overhead. A giant piñata in the shape of a red high-heeled shoe, it twirled in slow circles.
She stepped over to a music stand and began leafing through the sheets. Then she brought all conversation in the room to an abrupt, immediate standstill. And all she did was open her mouth to sing. It was a voice that sent a tremor through the roof. Like the old-timers say, she really belted one out. And she followed it up with one thrilling tune after another.
It’s been two years since then, and Stephanie Garcia looks the part of a jazzy diva these days. Her lipstick’s redder, her dresses slinkier, and her hair and favorite microphone are the very definition of the word “retro.” Stephanie and Aurora Bleu play hundreds of gigs a year, but they’ve always left the calendar open to return to the place where they played their very first gig.
At the time, we had no idea it was their very first gig. How many bands have a sound so well-defined from the get-go?
Come be entertained. You’ll know immediately why we feel so lucky that HWNT is such a hotbed of talent!
