8/15/2012

Good morning HWNT members and friends!

I am still collecting items for the 8th Annual ArtSi Art Show & Auction. We are only a couple of weeks away from meeting our deadline - September 1st.Please contact me and I will coordinate a time to stop by and pick up the items. Silent auction items we have collected in the past: Hair salon certificates, Jewelry, Restaurants gift cards, Ranger tickets, Service items, etc., or monetary donations to a worthy cause.

I have included a silent auction contribution form that you can send to your contacts. See letter below. Contact me if you have any questions, have items to donate or want to make a monetary donation.

Cindy Olivera 682-433-9970 or ms.cindyolivera@gmail.com.

Dear Silent Auction Partner,

With Hispanic enrollment in local schools at an all-time high, the number of young women needing help preparing for college continues to grow. For over the past decade, the Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas (HWNT) has been building a unique fast track that mentors deserving local Latina students. Our program is the Latinas In Progress (LIP) educational series. Through LIP we familiarize Latinas who are graduating High School seniors with the rigors of college, as well as teach them the skills they will need on to succeed in their personal and professional lives.

LIP students are counseled on how to seek out scholarships and other sources to support their education, but we like to do our part, too. Each fall, HWNT produces the ArtSí Art Show & Silent Auction with donations from artists, collectors, business and individuals such as you. Those partners who are eager to help – but would rather keep their collection intact – either donate monies at a specific sponsorship level, or provide an endowment that matches the amount raised at the art show.

In 2012, we, HWNT and our generous college partners, which include Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, and University of Texas Arlington to name a few, with community partners, private and HWNT member donors, we awarded scholarships worth more than a $400,000.00 to make the dreams of 36 young ladies come true. This year’s ArtSí will be our 8th annual fundraiser and we hope to continue to grow the amount of scholarship funding awarded at our 2013 Mother-Daughter Scholarship Awards Banquet.

The Hispanic Women’s Network of Texas is a statewide organization devoted to promoting the advancement of women. The Fort Worth chapter believes and supports this effort through LIP and the participating students and scholarship recipients. I’m sure you will agree that a college educa-tion helps build productive citizens who contribute greatly to our community and quality of life. We find that education is the key to bringing whole families into the fabric of our community and we hope you will join us in our efforts to support these students.

Thank you for your donation.

Aurora Bleu Performing Live at ArtSí

At the time, we had no idea how fortunate we were to be the very first.

It snowballed like these things do – somebody knew an HWNT member who had someone in her family in a band.  Would they be willing to donate a performance at our annual fundraiser?  Sure!

As the band began tuning up that evening, a young woman sat patiently at a nearby table.  She wore a blue dress that buttoned down the front.  Thick, raven-colored hair cascaded down her shoulders.  Her shapely lips would curl into a smile every time she looked up at the giant piñata hanging overhead.  A giant piñata in the shape of a red high-heeled shoe, it twirled in slow circles.

She stepped over to a music stand and began leafing through the sheets.  Then she brought all conversation in the room to an abrupt, immediate standstill.  And all she did was open her mouth to sing.  It was a voice that sent a tremor through the roof.  Like the old-timers say, she really belted one out.  And she followed it up with one thrilling tune after another.

It’s been two years since then, and Stephanie Garcia looks the part of a jazzy diva these days.  Her lipstick’s redder, her dresses slinkier, and her hair and favorite microphone are the very definition of the word “retro.”  Stephanie and Aurora Bleu play hundreds of gigs a year, but they’ve always left the calendar open to return to the place where they played their very first gig.

At the time, we had no idea it was their very first gig.  How many bands have a sound so well-defined from the get-go?

Come be entertained.  You’ll know immediately why we feel so lucky that HWNT is such a hotbed of talent!

Art that Inspires: The Act of Hope by Tasha McGhie

The Act of Hope
by Tasha McGhie

Acid Free artist paper and acrylic

"Life without hope is death in disguise"

This piece was inspired by my "sisters" whom I have sponsored through Women for Women International. More recently, it was also inspired by the women right here in my community, whom I've met through volunteer work, who are fighting to not only survive but thrive. In war-torn regions all over the world and even in our own neighborhoods, women are hoping for a chance: a chance to change their lives, their children's lives, their neighbor's lives and the world in which they live.

It gives me great joy to make art with purpose and in some way to engage others to also become part of the act of hope. Using silhouettes as a medium enables me to project an image that allows the onlooker to fill in the blanks based on his or her own experience. In this piece, four women from different countries unite to form a collective power so strong, it can move mountains.

Dear Amistades,
We are in need of Silent Auction items for our Latina Art Show.  Check with your hairdresser, oil change shop, manicurist, etc., to see if they can donate their service.

In 2011, we, HWNT and our generous college partners, which include Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, and University of Texas Arlington to name a few, with community partners, private and HWNT member donors, we awarded scholarships worth more than a quarter of a million dollars,  to make the dreams of 20 young ladies come true.  This year’s Art Show will be our 7th annual fundraiser and we hope to continue to grow the amount of scholarship funding awarded at our 2012 Mother-Daughter Scholarship Awards Banquet.
